TEMPO! is a partnership between The Pasadena Symphony, the Pasadena Unified School District and schools. Designed and conceived by the Symphony in cooperation with teachers and school principals, this program aims to increase music education opportunities for students and their teachers, using both skills-based instruction and the integration of music into the core curriculum. Through the use of a music-infused curriculum, teacher training, school concerts, resource provision, the B.E.AT guidebook for parents, and the TEMPO! 3rd grade Recorder program, TEMPO! is in compliance with the State of California's Visual and Performing Arts Standards.

MUSIC-INFUSED CURRICULUM
The TEMPO! Curriculum resource book features a series of lesson maps that are based on sequential learning for children ages 6-8 and features learning about the families of instruments, study of the elements of music with links to children's literature and literacy themes and in third grade, children learn to read music and play the recorder. Each lesson map is story-based and provides the starting point to developing an understanding in and through music. Activities, extensions, and teacher tips accompany the lessons and further deepen connections across the curriculum.

TEACHER TRAINING
Interactive, hands-on workshops familiarize teachers with the use of music integrated in the classroom, the TEMPO! Curriculum Resource Book and related music and arts materials and tips on working with the teaching artist and how to use the Complete Recorder Resource Book. Lessons are modeled and resources demonstrated, and teachers are guided in the use of arts teaching strategies. The Symphony's Director of Education provides further support throughout the year in the form of on-site visits.

SCHOOL CONCERTS
Throughout the year, students attend a series of six exciting and interactive concerts that enable students to use auditory and visual senses to interact with and learn from the performers. A variety of music styles and groupings are demonstrated, ranging from classical to ethnic music. Each concert references the Visual and Performing Arts Standards. Teachers are provided with a concert guide to assist in concert preparation and follow-up.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
The B.E.A.T. (Bring Education About TEMPO! Home) is a guide for parents written in English and Spanish. The guide written in English and Spanish contains useful information about the program, the Pasadena Symphony and on the importance of music education,. Parents receive the TEMPO! schedule and are encouraged to attend concerts.

Parents Bring Education About TEMPO! Home (BEAT) is a supporting component of TEMPO! Information/Activity packets are sent home with every student, and parents are provided with a concert schedule. This Information/Activity packet contains games, instrument making instructions, drawings and puzzles for parents to enjoy with their children. A suggested listening list is also included.
