The Science of Sound is a hands-on, student-centered curriculum. By experimenting with tubes and strings, boxes and rubber bands, students begin to understand vibration, amplification, pitch, and frequency. Armed with an understanding of the physics of sound, students build and play wind, brass, string and percussion instruments made completely from recycled and found objects.
Teaching artists conduct a series of bi-weekly workshops in the middle-school classroom on a quarterly basis. At the end of each quarter, Pops Music Director Rachael Worby and a professional ensemble will come to perform for each classroom. The focus of each performance is to foster a real exchange of ideas between the students and the musicians, and the format of the visit is open, relaxed and energetic.
