What is GoodSearch?
GoodSearch is a search engine which donates money
to charity every time you search the Internet. The search engine is
powered by Yahoo! so the user receives high quality search results and
gets to support their favorite organization while doing an everyday task.
How does it work?
• On the
GoodSearch homepage, visitors choose from hundreds of thousands of
charities or schools or can add their favorite cause to the GoodSearch
list.
• Users
then search the Internet just like they normally would and because the
site is powered by Yahoo!, they receive the same high-quality search
results that they are accustomed to.
• Revenue
generated from searches is then directed to the charity or school
designated by the user.
It's that easy…every time you GoodSearch,
your charity earns money and the more you search, the more they collect.
Where does the money come
from?
Search engines make most of their money from companies who pay to have ads
on search results pages. At GoodSearch we have developed a way to redirect
money earned from your search to the charity or school of your choice. In
other words, a portion of advertiser dollars (and not your own!) earned as
a result of your search, are now passed along to the organization you've
chosen to support. Last year search engines generated nearly $4 billion
dollars from this type of advertising. The founders came up with the idea
for GoodSearch when they thought about what even a fraction of that money
could do if given to organizations trying to make the world a better
place.
How much money can my organization earn?
We estimate that each search will generate approximately $0.01 for the
designated charity or school. Thus:
• A small
charity or school with 100 supporters searching twice a day would receive
$730 per year.
• A
mid-sized charity or school with 1,000 supporters searching twice a day
would receive $7,300 per year.
• And
finally, a large charity or school with 10,000 supporters searching twice
a day would receive $73,000 per year.
The sky is the limit. The more people use
GoodSearch, the more money will be directed towards causes. There is no
cap on how much money we will direct to charities.
What percentage of
profits goes to the charities?
GoodSearch is a company with a unique social mission, which involves
giving as much money back to charity as possible, while remaining a
self-sustaining business. The company will contribute a minimum of 50% of
its revenue to the designated charities with the goal of increasing this
percentage as the company matures (typically socially aware companies
donate anywhere from 2% to 20% of profits). We have chosen to give a
portion of revenue instead of profit because we want to be as transparent
as possible. Other examples of companies in the category of "social
entrepreneurship" include Newman's Own, Ben & Jerry's and the Body Shop.
Do the users ever have to
pay anything?
No. That's the whole point of GoodSearch! Using this search engine – and
thereby generating money for your favorite charity – is free. We know that
most people, like us, would love to be able to give limitless amounts of
money to every charity they support, but of course cannot. Some have given
all they can for now; others have the desire to help, but no funds.
GoodSearch now provides all Internet users with an easy way to donate to
their favorite charities without ever having to tap into their own
finances.
Why was GoodSearch
launched?
The co-founders Ken and JJ Ramberg have always been active in charitable
organizations. Ken sits on the board of the largest free clinic in the
United States. JJ dedicates a month each year to volunteering for
Microfinance organizations overseas. On top of this, they both have
substantial and successful Internet experience. Ken founded Jobtrak.com
which became the largest college job listing and resume management site
and which he eventually sold to Monster.com. JJ holds her MBA from
Stanford and was one of the first employees at Cooking.com, an Internet
retailer. When their mother Connie (who was Ken's co-founder of Jobtrak)
was diagnosed with cancer, they came across many organizations in
desperate need of money and wanted to come up with a way to help people
fund their favorite causes even if they didn't have any more money to
give. They came up with the idea for GoodSearch when they realized what
even a small portion of the $4 billion advertising market for search
engines could do if given to people who are trying to change the world.
The site is dedicated to their mother who lost her battle with cancer.
Can users donate to more
than one cause?
Yes, of course. Users can donate to as many causes as they'd like. To make
giving back as easy as possible, we've designed the site so that each time
a user visits GoodSearch, their "My Charity" selection will remain the
same as the last time they used the search engine. However, users can
support as many causes as they'd like by just changing the charity
selected (their "My Charity") on the GoodSearch homepage each time they
conduct a new search.
How can we help spread
the word about GoodSearch?
Our goal is to direct as much money as possible to the charitable
organizations the GoodSearch users support, so we're not spending a lot on
advertising or marketing. That's why we need your help in spreading the
word. Please email your supporters and friends, include a link on your
website, emails, or in your organization's newsletters (we've provided
templates, logos and draft letters on our site to help you) and mention
GoodSearch at any events you may have. The more people know about and use
GoodSearch, the more money we will generate and be able pass along to
charities and schools in need of funds!
